Christmas in New York City

Christmas holiday weekend, 2016.
3000 miles away from long-time friends
8000 miles away from family

Cash-strapped and with Time working against me, I watched as new friends dispersed one by one out of the city to celebrate the Christmas holiday with their families. Taiwan. Europe. Delaware. Hawaii. California. Florida. Finally, it was just me and my cat in our little Brooklyn apartment. And oddly, it ended up being alright.

In such a large and bustling city, it’s so easy to feel small and lost in the ever-growing sea of bodies, and as this was my first Christmas away from family and long-time friends, I initially felt a pang of distraught about having to spend my favorite holiday alone. But the moment passed when I realized that there’s nothing wrong with being alone. In fact, being alone can feel liberating. It’s the moment when you can just exist – exist and be whole in the present, despite any and all flaws and without anyone else to define who you are. We forget to revel in these overlooked moments. So this Christmas weekend, I buried my thoughts of self-pity and thoroughly enjoyed the holiday sights that the city had to offer while reminding myself to take more time for myself and to remember how to truly relax. From marveling over the trees at South Street Seaport and Lotte New  York Palace to taking in the holiday window displays of Lord & Taylor and Bergdof Goodman on 5th Avenue, to binging on favorite holiday movies such as Home Alone, Santa Clause and The Holiday at night, this Christmas took familiar experiences and spun them into new ones that embraced self-rediscovery and lots of cat conversations.

Merry Christmas xx
