Blue! So much blue! So much cerulean blue!
I’m definitely more of a city girl, but exploring the quaint town of Avalon on Catalina Island was a refreshing change to my usual travel city-centered destinations. For a long time, I’ve avoided boats because of previous scarring experiences from my childhood involving major seasickness, but luck was on my side this time: the beautiful day was not marred by any unfortunate body reactions! As for the ferry boat that will transport you to and from Catalina Island, I recommend upgrading your seats to the Commodore Lounge, which not only features comfortably plush seats in a less-crowded setting but also comes with a light snack and beverage voucher! Here’s another ferry tip: don’t wear flowy dresses or skirts if you plan on going outside onto the deck, because the wind WILL blow your skirts up!
If you ever decide to venture out to this gem, consider staying overnight. I was there with my family for a mere 4.5 hours, and it was definitely not enough time to do everything the island offered. We managed to rent a golf cart for a scenic drive as well as take a 20hp motorboat out on the waters, but I do wish we also got to indulge in ziplining, scuba-diving, jet-skiing, para-sailing, and even dry land activities such as expeditions into the backcountry parts of the island. Granted, everything is on the pricey side (and honestly, the food is nothing special), but as with everything, if you want to have fun, you have to be prepared to spend some money. But ultimately, how great of an experience you get really depends on how you make of what you have, so relax and indulge a little from time to time!
