From elementary school until high school, I always only had one pair of shoe (not the same pair for all those years, obviously). I was told that shoes didn’t matter; they should always match your clothes (my dad would only let me wear white shoes, so for the longest time, I only wore white Adidas, and then later, white Converse), but essentially, shoes were there just so you didn’t have to walk around barefoot like some jungle child.
When I finally earned some of my own money and had some freedom to explore and search for my own fashion style, I quickly embraced all sorts of footwear. Boots became (and still is) my go-to shoe. After some embarrassing and stumbling experiences, I learned to walk in heels. And over the years, even though some shoes have come and gone, I’ve built up quite the collection, as many as my bank account will allow.
Choosing your shoes is about more than just how it reflects your personal style and how it flatters your body; it’s also about sending the right message and conquering each day at work like the power woman you all are (or can be). Even though I have my off days where all I want to do is paddle around in my slouchy flat boots, I always try to tackle each day at work with a confident and optimistic mindset, and I don’t know about you, but my choice of shoes can play a huge factor in how I approach my days. Below, I’ve put together my list of 10 essential styles every power woman should have in her wardrobe.
The classic black pumps: You can never go wrong with a pair of classic black pump. They literally match and elevate every outfit, so as long as you’re comfortable in them, you’ll feel and look confident in any setting.
What I love: Kate Spade “Licorice Too” Pump
The classic nude pumps: Like black pumps, nude pumps are forever timeless and versatile. Bonus point? They elongate your legs! But nude pumps can be a little tricky. When you’re shopping for one, try to match your skin tone as closely as possible.
What I love: Isaac Mizrahi ‘Lamis’ Pump (pictured above)
Black Ankle Boots: Ah, my weakness! I have SO many of these. Black ankle boots, regardless of leather or suede, are the perfect choice for when you need something a little edgier (and more comfort) than pumps.
What I love: Naughty Monkey “Angle Tangle” Bootie / Ted Baker “Issador” Bootie
Polished Sandals: I actually just bought a Calvin Klein one for myself. Open toe shoes might not fly at every office, but there’s no one preventing you from wearing it on your own leisure time! Your best bet would be a sleek-looking one with a tiny peep toe.
What I love: Vince “Faye” Bootie / Via Spiga “Fabrizie” Bootie / Vince “Anetta” Bootie
Sophisticated Kitten Heels: Last summer, I practically lived in my Kurt Geiger grey suede kitten heels. Kitten heels are much more comfortable than stilettos without lacking on style.
What I love: Sole Society “Tamra” Pump / Via Spiga “Hue” Pump
Tall Boots: Mid-calf, knee-high, over-the-knee… regardless of height, tall boots will keep your legs warm while elongating them (seriously, try on a pair of OTK boots and look at yourself in the mirror).
What I love: Tory Burch “Simone” Boot / Steve Madden “Pondrosa” Boot
Ballet Flats: Sometimes, you just want to feel like you’re wearing nothing without actually going shoe-less. This is where ballet flats come into the picture. They’re perfect for those days when you’re constantly running around!
What I love: Restricted “Chocolate” Flat (pictured above) / Cole Haan “Tali” Flat
Comfortable Commuting Shoes: There’s nothing wrong with commuting to work in a pair of comfortable shoes and then switching into a different (more sleek) style at your desk. There’s nothing worse than starting the work day off with severe foot pain! And if the office is OK with sneakers… all the better (I love wearing my Kurt Geiger wedge sneakers to work)!
What I love: Converse “Shoreline” Sneaker / Geox “Eleni 8” Wedge Sneaker
Printed Pumps: This is something I still need to get onboard with. Like a statement necklace, a pair of printed pumps add that extra sparkle to your outfit (and would be such a great look for spring!)
What I love: Sam Edelman “Delilah” Pump
Sleek Loafers and Oxford: This is another style that I’m missing from my shoe closet. Loafers and oxfords aren’t just for the boys anymore! Choose one with a pointed toe for the most professional look, and don’t be afraid to find one with a sturdy heel!
What I love: Charles David “Paris” Pump

Love this list. Because of who I am I would add combat boots but I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
I have a fashion blog if you’d like to check it out: http://thegeekchickblog.com/
